Time to close this blog, I think.

I've used it to find different angles to express my views on things - i.e. politicians, preachers and police are lying, thieving bastards who look after themselves to the detriment of everyone else....and financiers are utter twats.

But the repetition just gets boring in the end, and doesn't solve anything.

Pity I can't think of (and haven't come across) a practical acceptable solution - bloody cataclysmic revolution doesn't seem likely or palatable at the moment, to me or anyone else (apart from the odd loony.)

So I'll finish by saying;

1. I don't want to be governed, but I don't mind being 'truly represented' in a democratic system.

2. I also can't be bothered with the various 'isms' that seek to tell me how to live and think, I'd rather work it out for myself.

I wish to complain about the scheduling of Geoff Boycott's 'expert' commentary on Test Match Special.

Currently my appetite is poor and I have been losing weight. Unfortunately this was not helped by Geoff Boycott's grating pompous voice at both midday snap time and tea time today.

I would, therefore, be obliged if you could rearrange the scheduling so that Boring Boycott is not droning on within a two hour window of any meal time - otherwise I may disappear due to weight loss before the end of the Ashes series.

Yesterday I received this reply, from Mayor Davies, to my email of the 8th June.

Thank you for your email, and for taking the time to contact me. I apologise for the delay in responding to you.

The Local Government and Housing Act 2007 introduced a number of changes that affected the operation of the governance of local authorities. These included the requirements for a referendum about a change from an elected Mayor to another form of leadership known as the executive.

The requirements for elected Mayors, and other forms of executive, are contained in the Local Government Act 2000. The 2007 Act makes the changes by amending the existing provisions in the 2000 Act. In Section 69 of the 2007 Act, Section 45 of the Local government Act 2000 is amended, limiting any local authority in England to having no more than one referendum in a 10 year period. This was originally five years. In addition, Section 64 of the 2007 Act adds a new Section 33G to the 2000 Act which provides that should a change of governance be approved in an authority which has an elected Mayor, the change can only be implemented three days after the date on which the next Mayoral election would have taken place, at the time the resolution was passed.

As the Council held a referendum on the 20th September 2001, the earliest date on which a further referendum can be held is the 20th September 2011, and any changes arising from the referendum could not be implemented until May 2013, when the next Mayoral election is due to take place.

Andrew 'Freddy' Flintoff is calling it a day for Test match cricket.

Good, and personally I wouldn't pick him for any of the remaining Ashes Tests. He's an average all rounder, and as the 'new' Botham, he's been a failure.

He has been designated as England's 'talisman' in recent years, and even had a couple of good seasons, but all in all he's never been a match winner. 75 Tests, batting average 31, bowling 32, only 5 centuries and just two 5 wicket hauls - certainly not much evidence of someone who can affect the outcome of a Test match there.

So bye bye Freddy, go back to your money making IPL contract and make a load of dosh whilst they still believe the hype that surrounds you.

A senior police officer who investigated the death of Ian Tomlinson told his family that the officer who struck him at the G20 demonstrations could have been a member of the public "dressed in police uniform"

Obviously the dozy cop had not seen all the photographic that is now available, but blood and sand, did he really expect this excuse to have any appearance of validity?

Protest/demo police routinely and arbitrarily batter anyone who takes their fancy, as any senior cop knows.

When I was a little lad, in 1950s Britain, I was told that if ever I was in trouble or lost, "I should ask a policeman." The rationale was that they could be trusted.

Experience as a young teenager soon threw this rosy Dixon of Dock Green illusion out of the window, and nothing since has led me to believe that the police are trustworthy (or competent for that matter.) This, I believe, has been a common experience of the police for many people my age.

So why did the Met Police let their officers have credit cards? Did they really trust them?

Now according to the Observer

More than 300 elite Scotland Yard detectives are suspected of defrauding the taxpayer of millions of pounds by abusing their corporate credit cards.

This nearly 10% of the total number of officers who have them.

One Metroplitan Police Authority member said,

"It beggars belief that our police, who are supposed to be solving crime, are suspected of fraud on a grand scale."

Well it may still beggar belief for those who hold onto the friendly bobby on the beat illusion, but for those with their eyes open it's only surprising that a bigger percentage aren't involved in this fraudulent practice. Unfortunately we are policed by bent, pervy, arrogant, mindless thugs with a disregard for the lives of anyone other than themselves.

I wonder if these 300+ officers under investigation will get the same treatment as the Donnygate councillors, or whether they will just be encouraged to retire on their nice fat police pensions

I first saw news of the deputy mayor's appointment here, but as I could find no link to local press coverage I thought it was all a big mistake. I was hoping that none of the councillors would stoop so low and give credibility to chump Davies, and consequently he would be unable to form a cabinet.

However, Peter Davies has named Tory group leader Coun Patricia Schofield as his deputy mayor, and she in turn is attempting to get more Tories into the cabinet.

The Tories have shown their true colours, standing firmly behind the Peter Davies' ludicrous manifesto. Hardly surprising, although I thought only the Community Group, in its lust for power and recognition, would consider such a move.

I have emailed Councillor Schofield the transcript of Davies' Radio Sheffield interview where he revealed his ineptitude, in the hope that she will reconsider her position and immediately resign this post.

I've just read the transcript of Peter Davies interview with BBC Radio Sheffield’s Toby Foster. Which you can read here on the Welcome To The North blog.

It could be described as ineptly hilarious, and probably will be by non-Doncaster residents, but the next 4 years of Davies' mayoralty will heap more shame on Doncaster council and will be an even bigger disaster, for us who live here, than the whole of Winter's three terms of office put together.

Davies' answers to the interviewer's questions on his main electoral pledges can be summarised by this response,

I dunno… again, I’ve got to find this out.

Our new mayor made election pledges that he cannot fulfill. You may say that all politicians do , but his reasons are novel;

1. He didn't check on the legality of any of his promises. Many are illegal and therefore impossible.
2. He didn't think he could possibly be elected. His major concern at the count was saving his deposit.

1. “Flipping”. MPs are able, apparently without question, to switch their designated “second home” from one property to another, and sometimes back again, to enable them to carry out extensive renovations or buy household goods for more than one property.

2. Property ladder MPs spend thousands of pounds doing up flats or houses, charging the taxpayer for repairs, then sell them on for a profit. Some then repeat the process.

3. Free food MPs can claim up to £400 per month for food without a receipt. Some MPs put in monthly claims for that amount – even when the Commons is not sitting.

4. Keep it in the family A room in a relative’s house or in a private members’ club is nominated by the MP as their “main family home”, allowing them to claim money from the taxpayer on another address, which is often more substantial than the “main” home and is the residence of their spouse and children.

5. Doubling up A group of MPs can each claim the full monthly rent on the same property, so that the taxpayer forks out more than once on the same address.

6. Letting In a similar practice, one MP can claim back the mortgage interest on a property while letting out the same address to another MP, who then claims back the rent on expenses so that the taxpayer foots the bill at least twice over.

7.CGT MPs avoid capital gains tax if they sell their second home by telling HM Revenue and Customs the property they are selling is their main home – even if they have told the Commons authorities that it is their second home.

8. Hunt the goods MPs have bought household goods for their “second homes” under the ACA scheme, but had them delivered to their primary homes.

9. Non-existent mortgages Lax checks have allowed some MPs to claim mortgage interest payments on homes where, in fact, the mortgage has already been paid.

10. Council tax MPs have claimed back the full rate of council tax on properties when they were actually paying the discounted single-occupant rate.

MP's expenses are a freeloaders charter.

It makes you wonder why they need a salary, given that their lifestyles are already fully funded.

David Davies, MP for Monmouth, thinks that many of his fellow MPs are considering quitting after revelations over their expenses claims. He went on to say that they had been "undermined", and he feared he was now seen as "a thief on the make."

Do they all live in cloud cuckoo land? Why would he think that MPs were ever seen as anything other than thieves on the make?

Anyhow, these grasping clowns will only resign if all avenues for them to make an quick buck are firmly shut.

An article in today's Guardian describes New Labour's, and in particular Gordon Brown's, abysmal failure to rectify social injustices. In fact old Slack Jaw has presided over an increase in those inequalities.

Britain under Gordon Brown is a more unequal country than at any time since modern records began in the early 1960s, after the incomes of the poor fell and those of the rich rose in the three years after the 2005 general election.

Even before the onset of the UK's deepest recession in a generation, official figures showed that only the better-off families were spared from a squeeze on living standards that saw median income virtually unchanged and fresh cuts in real pay for those on the lowest salaries.

Since Tony Blair's third election victory, the poorest 10% of households have seen weekly incomes fall by £9 a week to £147 once inflation is accounted for, while those in the richest 10% of homes have enjoyed a £45 a week increase to £1,033.

Current practice in England, Wales and Northern Ireland allows police to retain a numeric genetic profile of everyone arrested for a recordable offence - regardless of whether they are charged or convicted.

The European Court of Human Rights judgement regards this practice as blanket and indiscriminate because it does not differentiate between criminals, the severity of their crimes and innocent people who had never been convicted of an offence.

So now the government propose that DNA profiles of innocent people who are arrested but not convicted of minor offences will be kept for six years, this also applies to children from age 10 who are arrested but never successfully prosecuted, and in cases of more serious violent and sexual crime, innocent people's genetic codes will be kept for 12 years.

I was not at the Brighton 'Smash EDO' protest, and only have press reports for information, (mainstream, local and Indymedia), and on that basis I've formed my views of it.

I fully supported the protests and actions around the G20, the timing, targets and locations were spot on, but I'm not convinced by Brighton.

Anarchism is not a sub-culture of the young and disaffected, or cranks and oddballs. Nor is it an excuse for random aggression and untargetted acts of violence.

To quote August Spies, Haymarket anarchist, "Anarchism does not mean bloodshed; it does not mean robbery, arson, etc. These monstrosities are, on the contrary, the characteristic features of capitalism. Anarchism means peace and tranquility to all."

This was a protest/demo, not even a full blown riot, never mind a revolution, where violence, including, what the Americans like to call, 'collateral damage' is inevitable.

On this occasion, the timing and some of the targets were well off.

Reported in the Mirror, "families cowered in McDonald's as a gas canister was let off outside." And a photo in the Brighton Argus depicts about a dozen or so young people on the top of a small cafe/ice cream kiosk. OK, MacDonalds maybe a valid target for anti capitalists, but not when poorly paid staff and customers are inside, and that kiosk is hardly an edifice of capitalism.

Is this really the best idea that we can come up with to Smash EDO and get the message of Anarchism across? Did anyone actually get anywhere near EDO, never mind smash it?

Having a go at the police, government (local or central) or fascist bastards at every given opportunity is perfectly acceptable, they are the enemies of the working class. But rampaging through the streets of a holiday town on a Bank Holiday Monday, when working class folk are trying to have a nice day out, is more reminiscent of the Mods and Rockers fights in my youth than a demo in the name of 'peace.'

There's obviously a lot of determination and commitment shown by those who were at Brighton, but...

No revolution will ever take place unless it is initiated by, and has the wholesale support of the working class.

Will the actions in Brighton encourage us all to rise up and claim what is rightfully ours?

Will it have the opposite effect?

Or will it just seem meaningless to folk who are struggling to get a fair crack of the whip - decent jobs, decent pay, decent homes, decent healthcare, decent education for their kids, and a say in the world in which they live?

The policing of the G20 protests at the beginning of this month was routine. Policemen hiding their identification numbers and beating up peaceful protesters is as much a part of British life as grey skies and red buses.

Well why not fight back, self defence is not a crime.

Change will not come about by peaceful means. Government have always been happy to permit peaceful police controlled protests because they cause no problems, and consequently can be easily ignored. The massive StW demo is a case in point. Had all those people taken control of the capital (by sheer weight of numbers on that occasion) rather than marching round in pre determined circles, the war may indeed have been stopped - well at least the UK's involvement.

A bunch of middle class wannabe eco-Ghandis aren't going to change anything, more fight, less hands in the air is what's required.

The officers tell him they are seizing material that will "prove evidence of his views". Copies of the New Statesman magazine were "seized because they have got political articles in them". Literature from the campaign group War on Want was taken because it is of a "political nature".

We saw what really happened only because a bystander captured it on video.

It then goes onto the publishing of Bob Quick's photo gaff,

...strictly speaking, the photograph wasn't legal...according to the Counter-Terrorism Act 2008, it's against the law to publish information about the intelligence services that is "likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism".

But this photo, which undoubtedly would be useful in that context, was published with impunity. Consequently the Telegraph article surmises that the law really means,

Surely it’s part of ‘God’s plan’ that she goes missing? Who are we to question God’s judgement? Or is God on some kind of sick kickfest where he makes her go missing, sees how many people pray to him, and then decides to intervene based on numbers of prayers received?

And if he intervenes here, and therefore has the power to intervene on other matters but chose not to, what kind of a nasty, horrible god is he? Why didn’t he step in to save Elizabeth Fritzl? Was she less worthy of saving from her situation?

The point is, surely out of all the pointless things to do here, praying wins the prize. Time would be better spent out looking for her, surely.

An interesting look at private rented housing here, albeit written from a middle class perspective, does illustrate the unsettled, insecure existence of tenants, and the potential for exploitative landlords.

The writer says,

One of my daughters has had her fair share of this in recent years, even being forced to move in the period between Christmas and New Year on one occasion.

Recently, housing charities and lawyers have noticed that section 21 of the 1988 Housing Act - put simply, the first step in giving notice to quit - is being used to undermine security. Some landlords even start the process of ending the tenancy on the very day renters move in, encouraging (or compelling) them to sign an acknowledgment that a section 21 notice has been served.

Renters who understand what they've signed are rattled, and increasingly reluctant to press for repairs, or they might accept untoward rent increases, fearing that, if they refuse, they will be shown the door.

With the social housing stock constantly diminishing due to Thatcher's 'right to buy' scheme, and the financial constraints placed on council's that prevent the building of replacement homes, this situation is already out of hand and is likely to increase.

It is time for a major rethink on council housing, and the laws that make the term 'security of tenure' meaningless.

However, evidence has now appeared that indicates Mr Tomlinson (the deceased) was a victim of police violence in the moments before he collapsed.

This proves that the IPCC is definitely biased and incompetent. The revelation that they were to fully accept the the police's version of events relating to the death without examining evidence from other quarters is utterly condemning.

For any outside chance of justice to be done, a fully independent inquiry must be carried out.

New Labour are considering a novel crime prevention initiative.

Following reports that crime has dropped dramatically in a South Yorkshire village since the 2007 floods, the Home Office are planning a pilot scheme to flood working class areas in an attempt to recreate reduced crime levels evidenced in Toll Bar.

If similar results are obtained from this pilot, the scheme will be rolled out nationally in 2010, when all working class areas will be systematically flooded.

The police are crap and politicians are contemptuous of the working class, but targets are targets, so they'll try anything...........possibly.

Sir Paul McCartney is proposing a spiritual shake-up in schooling for the national curriculum.
